Easy Sloppy Joe with a homemade BBQ sauce made in the same pan with the beef! The Date Syrup adds plenty of depth without being dominant like dark molasses
Serves 3-4, 20 min total time
Ingredients:
1 medium-sized onion, peeled and diced
2-3 tablespoons olive oil
1-pound ground beef
1 tablespoon tomato paste
3-4 tablespoons ketchup
3-4 tablespoons light soy sauce
2-3 tablespoons NuNature Date Syrup
1/2 teaspoon of paprika (preferably smoked)
1-3 tablespoons of vinegar (like apple cider vinegar)
1/4 cup water (or more, see preparation)
Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
To serve:
3-4 Sloppy Joe or burger buns
Method:
- Heat the olive oil in a wide nonstick skillet. And the onions and sauté 2-3 minutes over high heat.
- Add the ground beef and break it apart using a wooden spoon. Cook the ground beef over high heat while stirring 3-5 minutes until cooked and slightly browned.
- Move the beef and onion to one side of the skillet and add the remaining ingredients to the other. Stir them well to combine, then combine with the beef and onions. Cook together for 1 minute, adding the water if it becomes too thick.
- Taste and add more soy, date syrup or vinegar to taste, then stir well. Serve in the buns.
Tip: for a vegan version, replace the minced beef with 1/2 cup cooked black lentils and 8 oz sliced or finely diced mushrooms.
